Experienced, Evidence-Informed Naturopathic Medicine

Frequently Asked Questions

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct form of healthcare that blends current medical research with natural forms of medicine. It emphasizes health restoration by addressing the underlying causes of disease. Naturopathic treatments are tailored and holistic, taking into account various factors such as physiological, psychological, spiritual, and environmental influences on each patient’s well-being. Naturopathic doctors serve as primary care providers, capable of diagnosing and treating illnesses, as well as ordering and interpreting laboratory tests. They collaborate with other health care professionals and possess comprehensive knowledge of interactions between pharmaceuticals and natural medicines.

Naturopathic doctors undergo a minimum of eight years of formal education, starting with a four-year bachelor’s degree followed by a four-year Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine. Throughout this training, they acquire expertise in biomedical sciences, such as physiology, pathology, pharmacology and clinical diagnosis, and extensive knowledge of naturopathic therapies, including clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, acupuncture, and lifestyle counselling. Naturopathic doctors must also complete two years of clinical rounds and pass stringent board and licensing examinations. Moreover, many also pursue additional training and certifications to further enhance their skills.
